Understanding White Wine Varieties

White wines are celebrated for their refreshing qualities, which range from sweet to dry, with varying levels of acidity and body. Discover the most popular types of white wine you need to try:

Light & Crisp White Wines

These wines are light-bodied and dry, with a clean taste. They are typically refreshing with a high acidity, making them perfect for a warm day or as an aperitif.

  • Sauvignon Blanc: This wine is crisp and dry, with a pronounced acidity and flavors like lime, green apple, and passion fruit. Our sommelier recommends Pascal Jolivet Fume Blanc from the Loire Valley in France. It is best paired with goat cheese, green vegetables, oysters, and light seafood dishes.

  • Pinot Grigio: A light-bodied and crisp wine with flavors of lemon, lime, pear, green apple, and white nectarine, it pairs well with seafood, light pasta dishes, and salads.

Aromatic & Floral White Wines

This type of white wine is known for its strong aromas and is often more expressive on the nose.

  • Gewürztraminer: A bold and aromatic wine with notes of lychee, rose petals, lemongrass, and ginger, which makes it a great accompaniment to spicy and flavorful dishes such as Thai and Indian cuisines.

  • Riesling: This wine type can vary from sweet to dry and is known for its floral and fruity complexity, with apple, peach, and pear at the forefront. This versatility makes it a great pairing for various foods, including spicy dishes, pork, and sweet desserts. For a fantastic example of a dry Riesling, our sommelier recommends Joh. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett from Mosel, Germany.

  • Moscato: Best known for its sweetness, it typically features the aromas of orange blossom, honeysuckle, peach, and nectarine. Moscato pairs wonderfully with spicy Asian cuisine, light pastries, fruit desserts, and soft cheeses. It also makes an excellent aperitif or companion to brunch dishes.

Rich & Creamy White Wines

These fuller-bodied wines often have a silky or creamy texture due to fermentation or aging in oak barrels.

  • Chardonnay: This popular wine has a medium to full-bodied profile with apple, vanilla, and butter flavors when oaked; it is crisper with more citrus and mineral notes when unoaked. It pairs excellently with chicken, seafood in creamy sauces, and buttery dishes. Our sommelier recommends Alexana Chardonnay from Oregon, USA, as a delicious example.

  • Semillon: A medium-bodied wine with the flavors of lemon, apple, and pear and sometimes features honey and toasted nuts when aged. It is often blended with Sauvignon Blanc and pairs well with clams, mussels, hearty fish dishes, and roasted chicken.

  • Viognier: This wine offers a silky, medium-bodied texture with flavors of peach, tangerine, and honeysuckle. This wine pairs beautifully with dishes that have a bit of weight to them, like grilled fish or chicken with creamy sauces or seafood stews.

Herbaceous & Zesty White Wines

  • Verdejo: This Spanish variety is crisp with an intriguing bitterness, giving it a distinct edge. It is known for its freshness and herbaceous qualities, with notes of lime, melon, and green herbs. It is perfect with fish tacos, herby salads, and vegetarian dishes.

  • Albariño: This type of white wine features bright acidity with flavors of lemon, grapefruit, and nectarine. It often has a saline mineral undertone, making it excellent with oysters, sushi, fresh shellfish, or light pasta dishes. If you'd like to try a great Albariño wine, our sommelier recommends Pazo Señorans Albarino from Rias Baixas, Spain.

Choosing a White Wine

Understanding the nuances of different types of white wine can help you select the perfect wine to complement your food and enhance the overall gastronomic experience.

  • Match the weight of the wine to the dish: Lighter wines like Pinot Grigio are best with delicate dishes such as light fish or salads, while richer wines like oaked Chardonnay pair well with heavier dishes like roasted chicken.

  • Consider the dominant flavors of the dish: Dishes with citrus or tart flavor profiles can be enhanced with acidic wines like Sauvignon Blanc, whereas sweeter dishes might pair better with a semi-sweet Riesling.

  • Think about the cooking method: Steamed or poached dishes require subtle wines like Albariño, while grilled or roasted dishes can stand up to richer wines like Viognier.

  • Factor in spiciness and sweetness: Spicy foods generally pair well with wines like Gewürztraminer, which can balance the heat with their sweet, robust flavors.
